Helpful Info Before You Hit the Water

Know Before You Go

We want your Montana fly fishing experience to be easy, comfortable, and unforgettable. Whether you're curious about what to wear, what’s included, or how to prepare, we’ve got you covered. Still have questions? Feel free to contact us directly — we’re happy to help.

  • Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. All anglers are required to have a valid Montana fishing license or a Yellowstone National Park permit, depending on your trip location. You can purchase one online at fwp.mt.gov or at most local fly shops.

  • What should I wear on a guided fly fishing trip?

This is one of the most common questions. Our weather in Montana can be extremely bi-polar. Its important to ALWAYS have a warm jacket and rain jacket even in the summer months. Its important to note that when it rains here, the temperature drops significantly. You might not be used to that depending where you are from.

*For spring, fall, and winter fishing, you should dress in such a way that allows you to add or subtract layers depending on conditions. We recommend a midweight base layer paired with a vest. On top of that a down or insulated jacket. Finally, its mandatory to have a weatherproof/waterproof jacket that will shed rain, snow and break the wind. Having a dexterous pair of fingerless gloves will be necessary for fishing but also have a warm set of gloves or mittens that you can resort to if your hands start getting cold. Hand warmers are a good idea! Also be sure to have a hat with earflaps. Preferably one with a brim to help block the sun or glare. Waders are optional if we are in the boat but keep in mind that sometimes they are utilized for warmth more than wading in the water

*Summertime fishing in Montana also requires us to dress in layers. We recommend Quick dry long pants paired with a sun-shirt or sun hoody that will help block the sun from your skin. Shorts and flip flops and bathing suits are totally acceptable in the boat but keep in mind that flip flops make it difficult to walk on slick rocks so sporting a closed toe shoe, sandal or even your wading boots may be a better option for you. For those of you wade fishing in the summer months, you will most likely want quick dry plants and boots for ambient temperatures above 80 degrees. Waders are too hot for those days but may be wielded on cooler mornings, days. Please feel free to contact us with gear recommendations. We are also happy to assist you fine-tune your gear once the time gets closer and weather is forecasted.

  • What kind of fish are in the rivers/streams I will be fly fishing?

You can expect to see rainbow, brown, and  Yellowstone cutthroat trout.

  • What is included in a guided fly fishing trip?

A guided trip includes instruction from our hand selected guides, river shuttle, all necessary equipment, and a streamside lunch (full day trips only.) You may bring your own rod/reel, tackle and flies.

  • What is NOT included with a guided fly fishing trip?

Guided trips do not include private water rod fees (if applicable), guide gratuity, Montana or Yellowstone National Park Fishing licenses. You are also responsible for personal outerwear (rain jacket, waders, boots, hat, sunglasses, sun gloves, etc.)

  • What is an appropriate gratuity for a guided fly fishing trip?

Appropriate gratuity for a full day trip is $125-200 per guide and for a half day trip $100-125. Guide tips are customary in this business and use their tips to offset their daily expenses.

  • When is the best time to come fly fishing?

We have open water 12 months of the year however, March-November are the typical busy months.

  • When is the best time to escape the crowds?

Typically Spring and fall. Any months outside of July and August will be less crowded.

  • What are some non-angling activities to do in the area?

Activities such as horseback riding, rodeos, Yellowstone Park tours, hiking and whitewater rafting. Don’t hesitate to ask about specifics. We would love to help you plan!

  • Do you offer horseback riding?

We don’t offer horseback riding, but we highly recommend Horse Track Outfitters for guided horseback adventures in the area.

  • What kind of fish will I catch?

Depending on the water and season, you may catch Yellowstone Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, or Mountain Whitefish. If you have a specific species in mind, let us know and we’ll try to target that during your trip.
